Bruno had the privilege of participating in a tribute to Ayrton Senna during the recent historic weekend in Monaco. Several Formula 1 cars driven by Senna and junior series cars were displayed and then driven in a parade through the streets of Monte Carlo to honor the memory of the deceased Brazilian.
In the poignant pitlane setting of Monaco, Bruno took a moment to reflect on the three decades since May 1st, 1994. He commented: “It is remarkable that even after 30 years since his passing, Ayrton Senna continues to be a powerful presence among us. Fans and those who witnessed his greatness have passed on their admiration to future generations. He continues to inspire and impact people’s lives.”
Bruno also had the opportunity to drive the McLaren MP4/5B, the car in which Senna won his second Formula 1 championship. After completing laps with the car in Monaco, Bruno expressed his excitement, saying: “Driving this car in Monaco was an incredibly special experience. The crowd certainly appreciated the nostalgic sound of the V10 engine echoing through this legendary circuit. I have always had a love for McLarens, as I grew up watching them. The V10 engine is like music to my ears, and I cherished every moment behind the wheel.”
Among the vehicles on display during the tribute to Senna in Monaco was the Toleman TG184, the car with which Senna almost won the rainy Monaco Grand Prix in 1984. Unfortunately, the race was shortened due to the weather, preventing rookie Ayrton from surpassing the more experienced Alain Prost. This race marked Senna’s fifth start in Formula 1.
The exhibition also featured Senna’s kart and race cars, including the Van Diemen RF82 that he drove in the 1982 Formula Ford 2000, a Ralt RT3 from the 1983 British F3, and a Lotus 97T that propelled him to his first victory in the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril.
Reflecting on the controversial 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, Bruno recalled: “I believe that race was a significant milestone for Ayrton to showcase his skills. It was the first time we witnessed his genius in the rain. And in his first year in Formula 1, he almost won, which is a rare achievement.
“The Toleman TG184, the car he raced with, is still here, and I have seen it in action a few times. It is a remarkable car, very different from what we have today. As the years go by, we see the technology of cars evolving, becoming more similar to what we have now.”
Bruno was only 10 years old when Ayrton tragically passed away at 34, but he still holds vivid memories of the quality time he spent with his uncle. “It was amazing. Ayrton was not the type to just tell me what to do; he always tried to show me instead.
“He would challenge me to overtake him on the outside and then push me off the track, blocking my defensive attempts. We had a lot of fun racing and driving together in karts,” recalled Bruno, who is now 40 years old.
This weekend in Imola, current Formula 1 drivers will pay tribute to Ayrton Senna. Pierre Gasly will wear a replica of the iconic yellow helmet with a green and blue stripe in honor of his hero.
Although Bruno also made it to Formula 1, he did not achieve the same level of success as his uncle. Bruno competed in 46 Grand Prix races during his three seasons in Formula 1, with his last appearance at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.
